An Evening with John Lapus and His D'Emperor Affair

Yesterday, Nov 17, Fierce Blogs had the privilege to have a one-on-one interview with an artist who is larger than life and who absolutely knows how to embrace it. Let's all welcome John Lapus as our Sunday Special Feature here on Fierce Blogs.
Yesterday, my schedule was really crazy! Lunch time was about fashion, the afternoon was mingling with beauty bloggers of Snoe Beauty Inc. and then for my night finale, I went to visit Teatro Tomasino's rehearsal in UST - D'Emperor. A stage play directed by John Lapus as part of the theater guild's 35th-year celebration.
Read along as we learn more about John's love for theater and his current affair with D'Emperor.

Sweet (how he is referred to in local showbiz) arrived wearing his usual energy and love for life. In fact, he had to leave the rehearsal room for a while to give time for our interview. He sat in front of me and settled down; but his body language suggests excitement to discuss his current project.
Fierce Blogs: You had it all made as a host, comedian and actor. What makes you go back to stage play and theater?
His eyes livened up before he answered.
The main reason is his undying love for theater and somewhat to give back to the guild that paved way to the successes he is embracing right now. It is also because of Teatro Tomasino why he proudly claims his professionalism and discipline when it comes to his chosen craft. Another advantage he can directly link to his theater background is memorizing lines. He doesn't struggle learning lines compared to actors who have no theater background.
When asked what was his major observation when it comes to his generation vis-a-vis the younger actors he had the pleasure working with, his sentiments suggests one that is interesting. Sweet referred to the younger members as the Internet Generation. Everything is a click away using engine when they need to purchase something for the stage play.
To quote "Mejo nabawasan sila when it comes to diskarte! Hindi sila ganun ka flexible. Di tulad namen no'n. Siguro nga kasi lahat ng bagay nasa internet na." (In a way they lack solutions or strategy. May be because everything is presented to them via the Internet).
But when asked what traits he like with the newer generation, here's what he proudly uttered:
"Mas maraming magaling umarte sa kanila ngayon. Dahil nga siguro mas exposed sila sa maraming bagay sa Internet. Mas madami na silang sources of information compared sa amin." (There are more good actors nowadays. Again, may be because they are more exposed to the Internet. They have better sources of information).
From the observation of Sweet, he is only suggesting that each generation has something to learn from the other. It is indeed a good example of a symbiotic relationship that is meant to co-exist. That is why this is the same treatment he has when it comes to his latest directorial job -  combing the senior and younger casts of Teatro Tomasino.
D'Emperor is an adaptation of "The Emperor’s New Clothes" created by Hans Christian Andersen. This time around, 5-time Palanca winner George De Jesus III gave it its modern twist and was directed by John Lapus; who by the way also acts as Teatro Tomasino's Professional Consultant.
“D’Emperor” is a satirical portrayal of a fashion magnate whose obsession over senseless extravagant fashion is taking its toll on his fashion house, Le Fashion Empire de Jour, especially when two seemingly sketchy, up-and-coming fashion designers promise the Emperor a new outfit which they say is invisible to those unworthy of their current positions. It is a story of how the arrival of these designers as well as a novice journalist altered the established order of the empire as well as the people working for the Emperor. (source: Teatro Tomasino)
